Our Programs
The National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) sponsors several annual awards programs that allow students and educators to become more involved and engaged in the American Revolutionary period. These awards encourage civic responsibility and duty, creative and effective teaching practices for the classroom, and a deeper understanding of the complicated issues surrounding the war for American independence. Many of these youth programs begin at the local SAR chapter level and move along toward the society and national level during the scope of each annual competition, wrapping up at the annual SAR Congress.
ROTC & JROTC Recognition
The National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) awards the ROTC Medal to foster the principle of the “citizen-soldier,” exemplified by the Minutemen of Revolutionary War days. This award is presented by an SAR Chapter, State-level Society, or the National Society to ROTC or JROTC cadets who are selected for having a high degree of merit with respect to leadership qualities, military bearing, and general excellence. The recipients are selected by the Commanding Officer of the ROTC or JROTC unit, who should be given full latitude in making the selection.
Veterans Recognition Committee

The SAR Veterans Recognition Committee provides recognition to living SAR veterans by awarding the SAR Certificates of Patriotism. It ensures that the work of the committee not only has a legacy dimension, but is also visionary and administratively sound so that the incumbent SAR President General can expand the Veterans Corps to include service to country during periods of peace, war, and/or armed conflict. During his 2016-2017 term, SAR President General J. Michael Tomme will accommodate the processing of Certificates of Patriotism for past, current, and future conflicts in the United States Central Command (CENTCOM) Area of Responsibility (AOR), which consists of eighteen countries in the Middle East and East Africa (these countries include Afghanistan, Bahrain, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Kuwait, Kyrgyzstan, Lebanon, Oman, Pakistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, the United Arab Emirates, Uzbekistan, and Yemen).
Chapter Flag Committee

The Chapter Flag Committee organizes and motivates chapter members to become involved in recognizing and promoting proper flag etiquette. The chapter flag committee and chapter members present flag certificates to individuals, corporations, businesses, schools, libraries, etc. that properly display the American Flag.
An SAR pamphlet on proper displaying the flag is available for presentation.
